High School English Flashback: Huckleberry Fin and the N-word
In response to “What are your thoughts about the use of the words nigger nigga and derivatives? Are some allowed to say it?”
I personally hate hearing the word, I have heard it a lot when I was in High School from my (Black Friends) friends in NYC to Teachers in High School. I remember hearing it when a teacher was reading Huckleberry Fin. I did not know how to feel about it at the time I knew it was offensive for Caucasians to say it but I did not know how to react, “Should I yell profanities, should I throw my desk at him should I get up an walk out of the class or what?” (I had low self-esteem and a difficult time expressing my emotions already and this was not helping). I never told anybody about it because I did not know how they would react. I think there was one day (either myself or another student) asked why he kept using the word, in the story. His reply was “I do not want to subtract from the fluidity of the the story but I will use N word.” From that day he, did use the N-word instead Nigger. I remember him slipping up and saying Nigger a couple of times and looking at me (I always hated that shit, pardon my language). I remember seeing or hearing from some people that “If someone uses Nigger its offensive but if they say Nigga then its not offensive.” Looking back on it I don’t know who the fuck came up with that because either way it is offensive. I have gotten to the point where I try to not use that word even with my fellow Blacks.
