The Front Porch Podcast #007: mom, s. african joel and big shows coming

Finally, podcast #7. I've missed you guys! Features a discussion of my mom's passing, an interview with my friend Joel Pollak, head speechwriter for the opposition party in S. Africa and a promo for some upcoming live shows of mine in Cambridge and NYC! Ways to get the show: subscribe via iTunes, download the mp3 file or subscribe to my feed with a podcast aggregator like iPodder or, for Mac, a great one is iPodderX. Shownotes Three main items:
  • My mom passed on October 12, and that's one of the reasons the podcast has been so behind schedule. Check out the memorial blog my sister and I built at www.dambudzo.com.
  • My friend, Joel Pollak, is the head speechwriter for the opposition party in South Africa. I interviewed him during his trip to the States in December at the Cambridge 1 restaurant in Harvard Square. Hear his take on the current state of S. African and U.S. politics
  • On Friday, Feb 3, I'll be doing another joint show with singer/songwriter Mieka Pauley at Club Passim. We sold this show out last year! Podcast includes her track, "First Stone."
  • On Saturday, Feb 4, I'll be performing standup in NYC at the debut for Laughing Liberally. The show is at Town Hall, and tickets are available!
  • finally, I share some audio I recorded from my mom's cross country drive in March of 2005, with more to come in future podcasts.
Intro theme music is "Diplo Rhythm" by DJ Diplo of The Hollertronix. Grab the track on iTunes now! Field recordings were done on an M-Audio Microtrack 24/96. Audio recording and processing courtesy of Audio Hijack Pro. Normalizing by Peak Express and MP3 conversion and tagging done by iTunes. Send audio feedback to frontporchpodcast-AT-gmail-DOT-com. Apparently, there's another Front Porch Podcast!

Update: "this dude" is named Todd, and he's cool with changing the name of his show. What a sweet fella. Please check out his podcast if only because I've been so lax on mine. I promise a podcast this week. Thanks for the inspiration, Todd. I owe ya.

I just found out via google that this dude over at Crasymaker.com just started a podcast last week called Front Porch Podcast. I sent him a letter asking to change the name. We'll see how it goes down. Don't want to have to sick my non-existent law firm on him :) But I don't want folks to be too confused.

Here's the letter I sent:

hey dude,

I'm a comedian living in Boston, and I just wanted to let you know my comedy-ish podcast is called the Front Porch Podcast too. I started it about a year ago though slowed production lately due to my mom passing.

Anyway, I'm not sure how tied you are to the name, but thought it might make things less confusing for both of us if you used another name. I'm already listed in all the major podcast directories (iTunes, ODEO, podcastalley, etc) with that name, plus the domain name frontporchpodcast.com. If you do a Google search on "Front Porch Podcast" you'll see me all over the place, and so would listeners looking for you

you can check it out on my blog www.goodCRIMETHINK.com

let me know what you think.

later, and happy new year (a bit late)

Just adding an Odeo channel for the podcast

This will link to My Odeo Channel (odeo/1b5b935cae465e6a). Odeo is another cool place to get and manage your podcasts. "What podcasts?" you ask. Good point. I was hoping to get one more out before the new year, but that may not be possible. I have a lot of good content recorded but no time to build the shows before I leave town. Stay tuned, and I appreciate your patience

The Front Porch Podcast #004 Book Expo Preview Coverage

This is the fourth podcast, and it's a preview of some great things to come, including a podcast promo by Orson Scott Card! You can download the mp3 file or better yet, subscribe to my feed with a podcast aggregator like iPodder or, for Mac, a great one is iPodderX. I promise it was worth the wait. To PW Fenton, CC Chapman, the gang at Area 51 and all other listeners, I owe you something good for making you wait two months, and I'm about to deliver! This podcast is a preview of an audio series I produced at BookExpo America in New York City June 2 through 4. I interviewed over 25 people, walked over 20 miles, attended parties and signings, and in the process, collected 300 minutes of "tape." And the podcast is just one piece of the three-part coverage which includes a photo journal and old style text blog entries. This preview podcast runs just over six minutes and is designed to give you a feel for the entire series to come. Included in this segment are clips from:
  • Orson Scott Card doing a promo for my podcast
  • Interview with Chris Kimball of America's Test Kitchen
  • Profile of author, Relentless Aaron, who began writing in prison and has published 10 novels in the past year
  • Clips from presentations by Randi Rhodes of Air America and author John Irving
  • First ever radio interview with the owner of fashion label, Fuck Yoga on New York's Lower East Side
  • Interview with Prof. Steven Farron, author of forthcoming "The Affirmative Action Hoax"
This should whet your appetite for the in-depth segments currently under production. We'll focus on the Expo from the perspective of authors, publishers, media and readers. It's gonna be hot! Field recordings were done on an iRiver IFP-795T with radio shack stereo lapel mic. Audio processing and mixdown courtesy of Soundtrack. The Front Porch Podcast #003 (Apr 16 2005)

This is the third podcast! Sorry for the month off, but I'm a busy man. You can download the mp3 file or better yet, subscribe to my feed with a podcast aggregator like iPodder or, for Mac, a great one is iPodderX. In this podcast, I continue to do more field interviews that I'd hoped to do on my AM radio show back in the day. Regular blog readers will know that I took a 3,200 mile cross-USA drive with my mother. About halfway across, we (me, mom and sis) stopped at LT Organic Farm for the best meal in America. I interviewed co-owner LT and captured some great sounds from his small Iowa farm. LT was a cardiologist in Chicago for many years before he and his wife decided that they wanted to prevent disease rather than treat it. Now they grow produce for and instruct 200 families in ways to grow and properly prepare healthy foods, and LT has a lot to say on the subject. Also included in this podcast is a promo for my London show with singer/songwriter Mieka Pauley on Sunday April 24th at The Troubador (263-7 Old Brompton Road), 8pm. Hope some of you readers and listeners can make it out for great comedy and music! The podcast promo includes a live recording of Mieka at the Paradise Lounge in Boston this past March. Field recordings were done on an iRiver IFP-795T with radio shack stereo lapel mic. Audio processing and mixdown courtesy of Soundtrack. Normalizing by Peak Express and MP3 conversion and tagging done by iTunes. Send audio feedback to frontporchpodcast-AT-gmail-DOT-com. Leave text comments in the comments link below. c u in london!

The Front Porch Podcast #002 (Feb 22 2005)

This is the second podcast. You can download the mp3 file or better yet, subscribe to my feed with a podcast aggregator like iPodder or, for Mac, a great one is iPodderX. The first podcast was a limited sort of dry run. Hopefully this one is even more interesting. I created what many people call a "soundseeing tour," but I think that's a stupid name. You don't see sounds; you hear them. You see sights. So, sightseeing and soundhearing. This is a soundhearing tour. The audio was recorded on Sunday February 20th and is a journal of my experience at a Boston comedian's networking event hosted by Corey Manning and Chris Tabb. You'll hear:
  • My drive down, including commentary on Boston's radio selection
  • Interviews with comics at the event, including the story of a very special Saturday night with Dave Walsh of The Walsh Brothers as well as a special message from one comic to the FCC
  • ... and my own 6 minute showcase performance
I didn't have a lot of time to perfect the audio edits or introduce each segment appropriately, but I still think it's tight. Field recordings were done on an iRiver IFP-795T with radio shack stereo lapel mic. Audio processing and mixdown courtesy of Soundtrack. MP3 conversion and tagging done by iTunes. Send audio feedback to frontporchpodcast-AT-gmail-DOT-com. Leave text comments in the comments link below. peace
