"I always suspected I might be black."

In answer to the Day 1 Question “When Did You First Realize You Were Black (or X)?”

When I realized I was black

I always suspected I might be black.  Features of some relatives, plus one branch of the family came from nowhere; no relatives.  Evidently did that to pass.  Cousin Sharron did the family tree…and found I was right.  The racist relatives were beside themselves.  It was beyond hilarious.  I lived in Alabama in the early/mid 80’s.  Every time I heard the n-word, I said “Funny you should mention that; I’m part n-word myself.”  You should have seen them splutter.  White (and black) folks don’t spot me, but Latinos do for some reason.  “What the hell are you anyway, Buck?  You’re sure not white.”
