Sen. Joe Lieberman is the Fredo of the Democratic Family. Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid is from Nevada. He should take Lieberman out for a fishing trip on Lake Mead. I'm just sayin...

An Appeal to Gloomy Progressives

I’ve noticed a lot of liberal folken and others who believe in the Bill of Rights getting down lately, thinking Kerry can’t win. Then I read a pretty amazing essay which reminded me of the pep talks my mom gave me when I complained about hard classes in college. In short, buck up! Here are the words that every progressive should read. All credit to Michael Bryant Hicks:

Take some action to save TiVo and iPod and all my favorite things

This is a quickie. Every time the “entertainment” industry starts to feel the heat from technology, it tries to bail itself out by writing bad laws and suing people instead of writing better movies, music and business practices. There is one VERY bad law that could soon be passed. It’s called the INDUCE ACT, and here’s how you can stop it…

Furl gets bought

I’ve been using a pretty cool web archiving/bookmarking service called Furl for a few months. It was just bought by LookSmart, and it seems like good news. Try it out at www.furl.net and read the letter from the CEO below…

Release of “Better Than Crying”

Better Than Crying:
Poking Fun at Politics, the Press & Pop Culture

When so many Americans get their news from Fox, when the presidential campaign of 2004 is about a war fought in the 1960s, and when a black man with an afro still can’t walk down the street without white people touching it, it’s time to laugh. At the wise old age of 27, comedian, writer and vigilante pundit Baratunde Thurston discusses this and more in his debut book: Better Than Crying: Poking Fun at Politics, the Press & Pop Culture.

If you are a fan of Al Franken, Jon Stewart or the Bill of Rights, you will love this straight-from-the-hip critique which answers all the important questions. What really goes on inside the home of boy band, O-Town? When did Vice President Dick Cheney actually die? Why will John Ashcroft use pork plantations in the War on Terror? And how do you celebrate Black History Month if you’re not black?

The Boston Globe writes, “Thurston’s timing in writing a political humor book couldn’t be better.” And The Somerville News writes, “This book is not an alternative to mainstream media. It’s an antidote.”

Welcome to the voice of a new generation of political satire. This book is sure to tickle your funny bone and assault your belief system. Read it, before doing so becomes illegal!

I knew there was a reason I liked Oprah

She just gave her entire audience free cars. As a celebration of her 19 years on the air, Oprah is making dreams come true. Ahem, Oprah. There’s a lot of us out here who would just love a new president!! Also, I’d like an Apple Powerbook G5. I know it doesn’t exist, but that’s why they call you Oprah! Hook it up, girl!

Bush and the Guard: Tapdancing in dookie

So the lazy media is finally waking up to the fact that Bush is not their friend but is and surrounds himself with people who lie, lie, lie. This National Guard mess is so much fun to watch, and seeing Bush spokesman Dan Bartlett tapdance in dookie is the best part. Apparently, we can’t know what a person thinks, unless they’re alive!

Momentary Jokes: Week Ending September 11, 2004

Just about every week, I send a message to my e-mail list with career updates, general silliness and what I call “momentary jokes” — current events-based humor. I’m going to experiment with sharing some of that with the wider blog audience. So enjoy! And if you do, head over to baratunde.com to join the list.

Some quick thoughts on “defending” marriage

Ok, that’s it. I’ve finally snapped over the whole gay marriage thing. Conservative types have been touting the “defense of marriage” for at least eight years and even passed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. The thing is, there is absolutely no defense of marriage! If it were really about defending marriage…

Someone stole my iPod, and I hate Securitas

After only a month, my new 40GB iPod is gone. I was performing at the upscale Charles Hotel and took it off my belt when I went to the bathroom. I realized 20 minutes later that I never picked it back up, rushed to the bathroom, and it was gone.
