WNYC's THE GREENE SPACE Presents
The Promised Land
Majora Carter & Wyclef Jean
Reforestation from The Bronx to Haiti:

Live Video Webcasts at  www.WNYC.org/thegreenespace

(New York, NY- October 1, 2009 ) -- She's the environmental and economic Mac Arthur "genius" from the South Bronx, who is spreading the work across the US. He made a huge splash on the music scene and wound up giving out ten thousand scholarships and planting a million trees. The one logical place where two such innovative minds might meet: WNYC Radio's multi-media platform and intellectual crossroads, The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space.

On Thursday, October 1 from 6-7:30 pm, environmental activist and founder of Sustainable South Bronx, Majora Carter, will host a lively 90-minute conversation with Wyclef Jean, the Grammy Award-winning music idol, Haitian-American Good Will Ambassador, and passionate philanthropist. Since its founding in 2005, Jean's foundation Yéle Haiti has funded countless scholarships, arts projects, emergency and food aid, and reforestation projects in his home country. As part of The Greene Space's NEXT New York Conversation Series of talks with the city's movers, shakers, and thinkers, sponsored by HSBC, "The World's Local Bank," Carter and Jean will trade tales from the frontlines of environmental education and activism and will offer inspiring insights into their creative solutions to seemingly intractable challenges.

Joining the conversation will be Jeffrey Swartz, president and CEO of the Timberland Company. Last year, Timberland launched its Earthkeepers Movement in an effort to engage one million consumers across the globe to support environmental stewardship.

The segment will be videocast live on site  and via the web here and here. This fall, it will be transformed into an hour-long radio special as part of The Promised Land, Carter's public radio series chronicling the visionary yet down-to-earth efforts of the activist next door. The special will air across the nation on public radio stations in October and November.
